How it all began
Anglo Cypriot Theatre started when a small number of enthusiasts put in thirty pounds each to guard against failure of their production of “Private Lives” in 1982. The production did not fail, and the Club has gone on to become widely recognized as the foremost English language amateur dramatic Group in Cyprus. In the seven times we have entered the annual Island-wide Rose Bowl Drama Festival, we have won three times and been runner up twice. 
was also asked to stage the inaugural production at the newly built theatre in the grounds of the Presidential Palace, Nicosia, and performed “A Man For All Seasons” to commemorate the occasion.
Today
Membership currently stands at just over 100, made up principally of Cypriot and British nationals, but it includes many people from other countries. All of us are linked by the desire to participate in, and promote, English language drama in Cyprus. The Club has always been free of the “politics” and prima-donna attitudes which frequently beset amateur Groups. It conducts its affairs in an informal manner, through a committee of seven, elected each October at the Annual General Meeting.
The season runs from September to July, during which time we aim to put on three, sometimes four productions. December now invariably sees a traditional English pantomime, which plays to an audience of over 2,000 during the run of a week, and involves upwards of 60 people on stage and back stage. Further productions follow in Spring and early Summer. The climate of Cyprus means that we can make the latter an outdoor production, including an extended interval during which our audience can "picnic" in pleasant surroundings and take full advantage of the Cyprus Summer.
Over the years the Club has covered the full range of drama, from Shakespearean tragedy, through mystery, modern comedy to farce. In between productions there are numerous Club nights, some with a theatrical theme, but most born from a simple wish to meet and relax socially.
The Philosophy
The theatre, for all members, is purely a hobby, but we never forget that our audience pays to watch us perform. Standards therefore are extremely high in all aspects of our productions, which gives us our pleasure and our satisfaction. So, whether as a member or as a theatre-goer, we hope to see you at our next show.
The Future
Our future depends always on our members. The global lifestyle of today means that our membership is always in a state of change. While we are keen to attract newcomers to Cyprus with theatrical experience, we also consider the development of new talent to be of the utmost importance, several of our younger members have progressed to professional theatre and we hope that has provided some of the knowledge and experience to make this possible.
New members are always welcome, not simply actors, but people who would like to help in the many supporting roles, of equal significance in staging a production, such as set design and construction, costume making, lighting, make-up, hair, and many other roles.
Previous experience is not essential but if you feel you would like to be involved in theatre we are an ideal group for you whatever your previous experience.
